I recently registered for “Social Media for Journalists,” via Knight Center’s next massive online course. This is a summary of what I learnt in Module 1 “Social Capital and the Media Landscape” taught by Ryan Thornburg of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Lesson 1: With Social Media, one should aim to give voice to the voiceless, hold powerful people accountable and shine light in dark places.
Lesson 2: Your audience on Social Media knows more than you do.
Lesson 3: The news on social media is a conversation not a lecture.
Lesson 4: News is a process and not a product.
Lesson 5: Your most loyal readers are your best distributors and your best sources.
