blackmail

Introduction:

On Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at exactly 2:34pm, I got a horrendous email from a certain Ahmed Salisu (aahmed.salisu@gmail.com) as shown below.

Dear Blossom,

Myself and my friends and the James Ibori national coalition are organizing a private meet-up with the former governor of Delta State, Mr. James Ibori in London. This is inline with other meetings including that with the president. He gets to have a break from the 8th to the 22nd of January 2014. We know you are one of Nigeria’s most influential social media operators and we know how much of an influence you have been on the #ForwardNigeria project. We believe your presence at this meeting will afford us the opportunity to lay certain truths on the table and also work out a plan for Mr. Ibori with respect to the 2019 elections. Seven influencers have been penciled down for this meeting and a couple of them are on board already. The meeting is scheduled for the 20th of January. If for anything you cannot make the UK meeting, there is another meeting tentatively scheduled for February 2014. If you have a couple of friends you think we should invite, kindly us their twitter handles and we will reach them directly.

If you are interested in attending, kindly help with the following information;

  • Your name as written on your passport
  • Date of Birth
  • Place of Birth
  • Where will you be traveling from to the UK?
  • Please attach the data page of your passport to your response to this email
  • Do you require a visa? If yes, please send your phone number in your response, we will call you in order to so help fast track your UK visa

A honorarium of  A honorarium of  £2500 will be paid to you on arrival. Please indicate if you want it paid in cash or sent to your account directly. Kindly provide account number.

If interested, please reply this email by the evening of Tuesday 29th of December, 2014. You will get an official invite with more details tomorrow after an email from you with the required information.

PS: How much will you charge us to run a #IboriRedemption hashtag on Twitter? We will a 5000 pounds bonus if it trends on Twitter Nigeria for a week

LIKE THE MEETING, THIS IS A CONFIDENTIAL EMAIL, PLEASE TREAT APPROPRIATELY. THANK YOU.

What next?

I quickly replied as shown below:

Good day, Ahmed Salisu.

I will first of all start by correcting a supposed misconception from you. I have neither at any time been a part of nor ever been an influencer in the #ForwardNigeria project.
That said, kindly note that I can NEVER be part of any project today or in the future that will seek to ever use my social media platform to trend #IboriRedemption hashtag.
Lastly, I may not be wealthy but I have a desired legacy that cannot be tarnished by assurances of wealth.
Do have a great day.
The rise of the e-blackmailers:
Nigerians woke up to a great new year with every one wishing the other a prosperous one. On Social Media, the story was quite the same. Suddenly, all hell broke out. A certain individual named Musa Kabir who tweets via the Twitter account, @NGR_07 suddenly broke the news about how he in conjunction with other equally despicable elements authored the despicable email. He claimed that he was led by good conscience to seek to blackmail others and get them to give in to their greed.
On a more than cursory note, you will find out that it is beyond this. I earlier tweeted the tweet below and it seems to be playing out with this development:

It is way beyond someone working in supposed good conscience. This is a clear attempt to discredit individuals and tarnish their image forever. This is an attempt to muzzle individuals by exposing them to ridicule should they have become victims of their greed. I have nothing but contempt for both blackmailers and those that fall prey to them out of unbridled greed.

To all those that will seek to cast aspersion on the character of those that genuinely speak out of conviction, this is a new year. You can still be great. It is not too late

Happy New Year Nigeria!
